Mission Patch by Ben Cowburn

What’s it all about?

It’s July 1969.

350,000 people are packing for Woodstock, David Bowie has just released Space Oddity and three men are on their way to the moon.

Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins are onboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft.

Two of them are destined to be the most famous men on the planet.

You are about to meet the third.

Michael Collins is on a mission all of his own.

Whilst Neil and Buzz muck about moonwalking, Michael has a serious job to do.

For 60 minutes, he will visit the dark side of the moon, out of radio contact with the rest of humanity. 60 minutes of utter solitude. 60 minutes to think about home. 60 minutes to examine the nature of existence. And all through the medium of some really catchy tunes. And a bit of puppetry.

The Apollo 11 Campervan is a rocket-fuelled display of musicianship, theatre and comedy. The space capsule campervan is a beat making, bass shaking, electro funk machine and countdown is about to commence.

Where is it?

So far, we’ve been to the rather wonderful At-Bristol Science Centre and the equally brilliant Gravity Fields Festival. We’ll update you as soon as we have new shows on sale. As you can probably see, they always sell out quickly.

How’s it going so far?

Well, the audiences love it. We love it and we’re planning a UK tour.

Why are you doing this?

I went to see Tom Adams perform his one-man show Howl at the Moon and it occurred to me that Lionel, my campervan, is around the same size as the Apollo 11 command module. As such, I suggested to Tom that we should rework the show, turning Lionel from the Spaceship of Our Imagination into the Apollo 11 Command Module.

Happily, Tom agreed and we’re rather delighted that Laura Mugridge helped us to create this magical experience.

I bet you didn’t know that Michael Collins took an electric guitar into space with him…

IMG_0015 (3).JPGWe’d like to thank At-Bristol for all their support in helping us put on the show for the first time. We’d also like to thank The Arts Council for their support.

Tell me about that Mission Patch

I’m glad you asked. Pretty darn splendid isn’t it? Well, Ben Cowburn designed it, by hand in Santa Cruz, California. Then Asterinidae made it into an actual mission patch, embroidered by hand. We’re pretty much blown away by that.
